RSS Aggregator Software

If you are thinking about installing aggregator software on your computer, I have no specific recommendations at this time. I have tried a few different software offerings and have not been happy with the results. There is also the time factor because the selection, installation and setup of the software is not trivial. I will describe in general terms what I did because it may be of some assistance to you.

The first software I installed was Pluck version 0.9.5. It was highly recommended by many sources and it is free. It is probably one of the simplest aggregators to install because it installs over Internet Explorer. However, it is limited to the Windows 2000 and XP operating systems. The installation was easy and learning to use it was also straightforward. What I did not like about it was that one of my feeds kept disappearing whenever the feed had an interruption in service. I had to delete the feed and then resubscribe. The refresh feature did not work on this feed. I have not tried the new version of Pluck.

I also searched the web and read many reviews and top pick lists to select some aggregator software to install on my computer. Then I learned that I had to install Microsoft's .NET architecture on my computer and a number of security patches to my operating system. After a while and a number of installs, de-installs and re-installs, I finally had my system set up to install the software.

However, by the time I got to this point, I also discovered the free Bloglines online service. I was so satisfied with Bloglines that I have deferred the installation of any aggregator software.

I am not saying that there are no advantages to having aggregator software installed on my computer. I just see no reason to at the present time because my needs are satisfied by the online services.
