Displaying RSS Feeds on a Web Site Using PHP Scripts
|
Probably the first question you have is why go to the trouble of installing scripts on your hosting server to display RSS on a web site. There are a number of free services available that only require adding a few lines of code to a page to display an RSS feed without the need for installing any scripts on the hosting server.
The answer is that most of the free services with the exception of one that I know of, only offer a JavaScript option for displaying RSS feeds. The problem with JavaScript on a web page is that search engines cannot see it. If you want to add content to a site in the form of an RSS feed to improve your ranking on search engines, the search engines need to see your content.
On the other hand, if you want to display RSS content that is not relevant to the theme of your web site, you are better off using the JavaScript version. Search engines prefer to see content that is consistent with a site's theme. So using JavaScript to display the content, you do not have to worry about how the search engine may evaluate it.
The following are some examples of free scripts that are currently available. Before downloading and attempting to install any of these scripts, you should determine if your hosting server meets the installation requirements.
CaRP Caching RSS Parser by Geckotribe
The script installed on this site's server is CaRP Koi which cost $9.95 USD. This script was used to display the RSS feed below. A free version with almost the same features is also available. The script was installed without any problems using the easy to follow instructions. Also, the free version automatically checks to see if CaRP can be installed on the server. For a small fee, they will install the script for you.
zFeeder at Sourceforge
This script has some very nice features such as templates for changing the appearance of an RSS feed on a web site. There is also a help forum that you may want to visit before deciding on this script.
Feed2JS at Maricopa Community Colleges
Maricopa's script is used to support their free service for displaying RSS feeds using JavaScript. This script also has some very nice styling templates. The script is free but you are pretty much on your own if you want to install it.
The RSS feed displayed below is the RSS feed for the Maricopa Feed2JS or Feed To JavaScript free service for displaying RSS feeds on a web site using JavaScript.
Each item in this particular RSS feed takes you to the same page because it is the Changes and History section for the Feed2JS service.
